The Unified Thermal Commons: Stop Wasting 80% of Our Electricity

Data centers convert 60-80% of their electricity into heat — and then spend more energy venting that heat into the atmosphere. Meanwhile, the homes and businesses a few miles away burn natural gas to generate the same heat from scratch. We are simultaneously paying to create heat and paying to destroy it.
The numbers are staggering:
- Global data center electricity consumption: ~400-500 TWh/year (2025)
- Waste heat (85-90% of input): ~340-450 TWh/year of recoverable thermal energy
- Equivalent to heating 30-40 million Nordic homes annually
- Currently, >95% of this heat is vented to atmosphere
At the same time, the average Western home wastes 6,100-10,900 kWh/year in recoverable thermal energy from appliances, drain water, and HVAC systems. We pay to create heat, then pay again to remove it.
The Solution: A Closed-Loop Thermal Economy
The Unified Thermal Commons report lays out a concrete, technically proven framework to close this loop:
- Data centers capture waste heat (55-65°C) via liquid cooling and store it in sand/soapstone batteries (400-600°C, 85-95% efficiency, $10-25/kWh-thermal, 30-50 year lifespan)
- District heating networks (4th generation, 45-65°C) deliver heat to homes, greenhouses, and industrial facilities
- Residential deep geothermal wells (300-500 ft, 50-60°F stable) store excess heat and provide heat pump thermal mass
- Home thermal plenums (low-flow water-jacketed loops) capture appliance waste heat and distribute it throughout the home
When integrated, these systems create a closed-loop thermal economy where virtually no energy is wasted.
Why This Is a Good Idea
The Economics Are Compelling
| Component | Cost | Payback | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sand battery (DC) | $10-25/kWh-thermal | 2-4 years | 30-50 years |
| Deep well (home) | $9,000-$14,000 | 10-15 years | 50+ years |
| Thermal plenum (home) | $1,500-$3,500 | 5-8 years | 50+ years |
| Heat pump water heater | $1,900-$5,500 | 3-6 years | 10-15 years |
A single 100 MW data center produces 85-90 MW of recoverable heat — enough to warm 5,000-10,000 homes at 60-80% below natural gas prices. The combined system payback drops to 2-4 years when district heating infrastructure is shared.
The Technology Is Proven
This isn’t speculative. The components are already operating at scale:
- Polar Night Energy (Finland): 1 MW/100 MWh sand battery operational since 2025, 90% efficiency, 70% fossil fuel displacement
- Microsoft Espoo (Finland): Will heat 250,000 residents by 2027
- Meta Odense (Denmark): 100,000 MWh/year to 12,000+ homes since 2019
- Google Hamina (Finland): 80% of local district heating, free to community
- ORNL study: 3 kWh/day of residential waste heat recovery proven in field tests
The Policy Window Is Open
- EU Energy Efficiency Directive: Data centers >1 MW must assess waste heat reuse
- Germany: 10% reuse mandate by July 2026, scaling to 20% by 2028
- France: 20% Energy Reuse Factor from January 2026
- Finland: Mandatory reuse unless technically/economically infeasible
The missing piece is the infrastructure — the district heating connections, residential deep wells, and thermal plenums — that turns regulatory compliance into a genuine community resource.
The Environmental Impact Is Massive
- 50-100 million tons of CO2 offset annually per 100 MW data center
- 35-50% reduction in total home energy consumption
- 40-60% reduction in water heating energy
- 3-6 month extension of greenhouse growing seasons in cold climates
- 50 million homes potentially heated by 2035

The Vision
The data center that trains your AI also heats your home, grows your food, and powers your industry. The cloud warms the world.
We can’t keep using technology that converts 60-80% of electricity into waste heat. We need to grab that waste and use it. The Unified Thermal Commons shows us how.
